Why Mentoring Works

Recovery needs more than sobriety; it needs a life

Getting sober is the beginning. Staying well means rebuilding the ordinary machinery of life, routine, work, money, and self-care. Life skills coaching builds that foundation, one steady habit at a time.

Structure that becomes second nature

Daily routines and systems that make sober living feel steady, not effortful.

Independence, rebuilt

Practical skills for work, money, home, and health that recovery often puts on hold.

Accountability that sticks

Shared goals and honest check-ins that turn intention into consistent action.

Is This Familiar

When life skills coaching helps

  • Recovery is going, but daily life feels chaotic
  • Basic routines like sleep, meals, and money slip
  • Returning to work or school feels overwhelming
  • You know what to do but cannot make it consistent
  • A young adult needs help launching into independence
  • Structure disappears the moment formal support ends
  • You want accountability, not just advice
  • You are ready to build a life that supports recovery

Sobriety opens the door; life skills help you walk through it. We build the practical foundation recovery stands on.

Our Support

What life skills coaching includes

Daily structure icon

Daily Structure & Routine

Hands-on help building the daily structure and routine that recovery and independence both depend on. We turn a vague intention to get it together into a concrete day, week, and system, because a life with rhythm leaves far less room for old patterns to return.

Independence icon

Work & Independence

Practical support with work, school, finances, and the moving parts of standing on your own. We break big goals into steps you can actually take this week, so independence stops feeling overwhelming and starts feeling reachable.

Accountability icon

Accountability & Goals

Clear goals and steady accountability that keep you moving when motivation fades. Together we set targets that matter to you and check in honestly on the follow-through, turning good intentions into visible, stacking progress.

Organization icon

Organization & Follow-Through

Real-world help with the organization and follow-through that so often trip people up. From appointments to paperwork to the small tasks that pile up, we build the systems and habits that make follow-through automatic instead of exhausting.

Boundaries & Relationships

Support setting the boundaries and rebuilding the relationships a healthy, independent life is built on. We work through the hard conversations and the limits that protect your progress, so your relationships support your recovery rather than test it.

Wellbeing & Balance

Guidance building the sleep, movement, and self-care habits that keep you steady over the long haul. Independence is not just paying the bills; it is a life that feels worth protecting, and we help you build the balance that makes it sustainable.

THE SKILLS RECOVERY RUNS ON

Recovery does not hold without a life that can hold it

Staying well takes more than willpower; it takes a working day, a paid bill, a kept appointment, and a boundary that holds. Life skills coaching rebuilds the practical foundation underneath recovery, one system and one habit at a time, so independence becomes something you live rather than something you are still waiting to reach.

How It Works

How support begins

01

A private conversation

Confidential and without pressure. We listen first and help you name what is really happening.

02

A support plan

Built around your patterns, your triggers, and the shape of your week.

03

Real-world support

Consistent presence between appointments and after treatment, where recovery is actually tested.

04

Coordinated care

We work alongside your clinical team when one exists, or help you build one through Heights Behavioral Health.

Build the life that holds your recovery

A private, judgment-free conversation is the first step. We will help you find footing, whatever the last few months have looked like.

Where Mentoring Fits

Non-clinical support that works with your care

Heights Mentoring is a private, non-clinical recovery support practice. We do not diagnose or provide therapy, psychiatry, or medical care. When those are the right next step, we coordinate with licensed providers and our sister clinical practice, Heights Behavioral Health, so nothing falls through the cracks.

WHAT LIFE SKILLS ACTUALLY COVER

The Ordinary Things Nobody Taught You

Recovery asks people to run a life they may never have been shown how to run. That gap is not a character flaw, and it is entirely teachable.

  • Cooking and food
  • Budget and bills
  • Appointments
HEIGHTS MENTORINGA life you can actually run
  • Laundry and home
  • Transport
  • Time and routine
Independence is not a personality trait. It is a set of skills, practiced in an actual kitchen on an actual Tuesday.

Learned by Doing, Not Discussing

We cook the meal, open the mail, and sit down with the bank app together. Skills taught in a conversation rarely survive the first time you are alone with them.

Systems That Outlast Us

A calendar you maintain, a budget you understand, a routine that holds without a reminder from anyone. The goal is that we become unnecessary.

Dignity First

Adults are treated as adults. Nothing here is remedial, nothing is reported home without your say, and nobody is graded on how quickly they get it.

Life skills coaching often runs alongside recovery coaching and family support.

Questions

Life skills coaching questions, answered

They are the ordinary competencies that addiction quietly erodes: sleep and routine, money management, cooking and nutrition, transport, appointment-keeping, laundry and household order, time structure, and knowing how to fill an empty evening. Relapse rarely begins with a craving out of nowhere. It usually begins with an unstructured week, no money, poor sleep and nothing to do at seven in the evening.

Young adults who never fully launched, people coming out of long treatment stays or incarceration, professionals whose lives were organized entirely around work and a substance, and anyone whose recovery is clinically stable but whose daily life still is not. If therapy is going well and the week is still chaos, this is the missing piece.

Not a classroom. A session might be building a workable weekly calendar, doing a grocery shop and cooking together, setting up autopay so bills stop being a crisis, practising a hard conversation with an employer, or planning what Saturday night is going to consist of. Skills are taught by doing them alongside someone, then handed back.

Occupational therapy is a licensed clinical discipline with assessment and treatment planning. Life skills coaching is non-clinical support that focuses on habit, structure and accountability in the person’s own environment. If an assessment suggests a clinical need, we refer to a licensed OT or the appropriate provider rather than working outside our scope.

Both, and the family piece matters more than people expect. Families often do too much, which prevents the skill from ever forming, or too little, which sets the person up to fail. We coach the household on where to step back and where to hold a line, which is covered further in family recovery support.

Small things move within weeks: sleep, attendance, a calendar that reflects reality. The bigger markers, holding a job, managing money without rescue, filling free time without incident, generally take three to six months. We agree what success looks like at the start so nobody is guessing later.

Yes, and it usually should. It pairs naturally with recovery coaching for the sobriety-specific work and with case management when several providers are involved.
