Why Mentoring Works

How process addictions work, and how mentoring helps

A process addiction has no substance, but the same grip. It hijacks the brain reward system and narrows life around the compulsion. We surround that struggle with the real-world structure and accountability that make change hold.

The same pull as substance addiction

Process addictions hijack the same reward and regulation systems as drugs and alcohol, which is why insight alone rarely holds.

Support for the hidden struggle

These behaviors hide in plain sight. We bring them into the open with structure and accountability.

Real-world help, not just talk

A mentor works in the moments the compulsion strikes, where recovery is actually decided.

Is This Familiar

Signs a behavior has become a process addiction

  • The behavior continues despite real consequences
  • Escalation over time to get the same relief
  • Secrecy, hiding, or lying about it
  • Using the behavior to escape stress or emotion
  • Failed, honest attempts to stop
  • Damage to finances, relationships, or self-respect
  • Restlessness or irritability when trying to cut back
  • Feeling powerless over the pattern

If this pattern feels familiar, whatever the behavior, it responds to the same thing: honesty, structure, and real support.

Gambling Addiction

Compulsive and problem gambling is a genuine behavioral addiction, driven by the same brain reward loops as substances, and it can quietly wreck finances, trust, and health. We provide real-world recovery mentoring for gambling, with practical boundaries around money and access and a plan for the urges that hit hardest.

Technology & Screen Addiction

Love & Sex Addiction

Compulsive sexual behavior and love addiction are isolating and heavily stigmatized, which keeps too many people from ever asking for help. We offer discreet, non-judgmental recovery mentoring that addresses the behavior, the triggers, and the shame, so you can rebuild trust and control.

ADDICTION IS NOT ONLY SUBSTANCES

A behavior can take over a life as completely as any drug

Gambling, screens, sex, spending, and other compulsions hijack the same reward circuitry as substances, and they carry the added weight of shame and silence that keeps people suffering alone. Behavioral and process addiction support brings the same real-world, judgment-free mentoring to these patterns, so you can take back the time, money, trust, and control they have quietly taken.

How It Works

How support begins

01

A private conversation

Confidential and without pressure. We listen first and help you name what is really happening.

02

A support plan

Built around your patterns, your triggers, and the shape of your week.

03

Real-world support

Consistent presence between appointments and after treatment, where recovery is actually tested.

04

Coordinated care

We work alongside your clinical team when one exists, or help you build one through Heights Behavioral Health.

Whatever the behavior, you do not have to fight it alone

A private, judgment-free conversation is the first step. We will help you find footing, whatever the last few months have looked like.

Where Mentoring Fits

Non-clinical support that works with your care

Heights Mentoring is a private, non-clinical recovery support practice. We do not diagnose or provide therapy, psychiatry, or medical care. When those are the right next step, we coordinate with licensed providers and our sister clinical practice, Heights Behavioral Health, so nothing falls through the cracks.

Questions

Process and behavioral addiction questions, answered

Any repeated behavior that produces relief or reward and continues despite mounting harm: gambling, gaming and screens, sex and pornography, love and relationship intensity, shopping and spending, and compulsive work. The DSM-5 formally recognizes gambling disorder and the ICD-11 recognizes gaming disorder and compulsive sexual behavior disorder. The rest are treated clinically on the same principles.

There is no substance to remove and often no withdrawal, which makes it harder rather than easier. Many of these behaviors also cannot be abstained from entirely, since phones, money and relationships are required to live. The work is therefore about boundaried use, function and replacement rather than simple removal.

Because there is nothing to smell or see. Financial damage, lost years and secret accounts accumulate quietly while the person continues to perform well at work. Families typically discover the scale of it in a single afternoon, years in.

Yes. Behavioral and process addictions sit outside the advertising restrictions applied to drug and alcohol recovery services, which is why this support can be discussed openly and in full detail.

Very often, and frequently one replaces the other. Someone stops drinking and the gambling escalates, or gets sober and the screen use consumes the evening instead. Treating one while ignoring the other is how people end up back where they started.

Accountability with someone neutral, trigger and urge management, structural boundaries around access and money, filling the time the behavior used to occupy, and coordination with a therapist treating what sits underneath. Mentoring is non-clinical and works alongside that clinical care.

Start with a conversation. We will help you name what is actually happening and point you to the right page, whether that is gambling, technology and screens, or sex and love. Call (713) 337-5063.
