WHAT IT IS
What Outpatient Treatment Means
Outpatient treatment lets a person live at home, and often keep working or studying, while attending structured clinical treatment on a set schedule. It spans a spectrum, from partial hospitalization (the most intensive outpatient level) through intensive outpatient and standard outpatient. Outpatient treatment is delivered by licensed clinicians. Recovery mentoring is non-clinical and works alongside it, carrying the plan into daily life.
LEVELS OF CARE
The Outpatient Spectrum
Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
The most intensive outpatient level, often most of the day, several days a week. A step down from residential, while living at home.
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Structured group and individual sessions several times a week, designed to fit around work or school while keeping strong support.
Standard Outpatient
Less frequent, ongoing sessions for those further along, focused on maintaining progress and preventing relapse.
HOW THE LEVEL IS CHOSEN
The ASAM Criteria
Clinicians use the ASAM Criteria, a widely used, multidimensional framework, to match a person to the right level of care. It looks at factors like withdrawal risk, medical and mental health needs, readiness to change, relapse risk, and living environment. The goal is the least restrictive level that still keeps you safe and supported, and to step up or down as needs change.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is outpatient treatment?
Outpatient treatment lets you live at home while attending structured clinical treatment on a schedule. It ranges from partial hospitalization (PHP) through intensive outpatient (IOP) to standard outpatient.
What is the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP is more intensive, often most of the day several days a week. IOP is structured sessions a few times a week, designed to fit around work or school. Both let you live at home.
How do I know which level of care I need?
Clinicians use the ASAM Criteria to assess your situation across several dimensions and recommend the least restrictive level that keeps you safe and supported.
Do you provide outpatient treatment?
No. Heights Mentoring is non-clinical. For licensed clinical outpatient treatment in Houston, including PHP and IOP, we refer to Heights Behavioral Health, and our mentoring complements that care.
Can mentoring replace outpatient treatment?
No. Mentoring is real-world, non-clinical support that works alongside treatment; it does not diagnose or treat and is not a substitute for clinical care.
Is outpatient treatment effective?
For many people, yes, especially when matched to the right level and paired with real-world support. The right fit depends on your individual needs.
How do I get started?
Call (713) 337-5063 and tell us what is going on. A licensed clinician listens and points you to the right next step, including clinical treatment at Heights Behavioral Health when that is the path.
What if I need detox or inpatient care first?
If a higher level of care is needed, the right step is clinical assessment. We will help you connect to it, including through Heights Behavioral Health in Houston.
